I have been working for MHS for 18 months now as their Information Officer. Prior to this I worked as part of a team of librarians within a commercial law firm specialising in the health sector. This was a new position at MHS as so was both terrifying and exciting in equal measures! My role has changed a lot since I have been here and I have really enjoyed the freedom I have been given to do this. My ideas have been taken on and other members of the team discuss their ideas and put forward suggestions for things I can do to benefit them so my job is constantly evolving, this is one of the aspects I like the most about my job.
Variety of work
It's definitely true to say no two days are the same and I can find myself doing any of the following:
• Cataloguing and updating the collection of source materials within the company
• Searching for and distributing current awareness materials
• Carrying out desk based research for projects
• Providing background information for proposals
• Creating databases for company information and resources
Support
James Fitton is my line manager and we have 3 monthly meetings to discuss progress and set goals for the coming 3 months. This is really useful for keeping on track and discussing any ideas or problems. It also gives us time to look at any training issues I may have and I have been encouraged to attend a number of courses. There is such a wide range of experiences and backgrounds amongst other members of the team that there is always someone who is able to offer advice and specialist knowledge.
The working environment
Niche provides a very flexible working environment, both in terms of hours and working from home. I've also found it very friendly and welcoming.
