Sian Wicks

Sian comes with a background of 25 years experience in the NHS and is live on the NMC register. Over the last 9 years, Sian has led on numerous SUI investigation in her role as Corporate Risk Manager in a London teaching hospital, a Clinical Governance Manager in a District General Hospital and as a high risk specialist governance lead specialising in Women and Children, in a Foundation Trust.
Her experience is broad and she has the ability to meet the needs of all stakeholders: commissioners; providers; regulatory bodies and the coroner.
She is also a Director of Alarm, the National Association of Risk & Litigation Managers and understands the complexities of running parallel investigations. She is fully conversant with the Memorandum of Understanding (2006) and works within the Department of Health guidelines. Sian has led on the 3 National Health Service Litigation Authority assessments and has project managed one organisation to level 3. She is passionate about patient safety & quality, and strives to make a difference.
She has the unique ability to work seamlessly with multi-agencies from the board to floor, and to satisfy the requirements of any external regulators.
Her keys skills are:
• Review of strategy and robustness of organisational processes in relation to patient safety, clinical effectiveness and user engagement
• Running individual SUI investigations
• Assisting the Coroner in his inquiries
• Thematic look back reviews for complex areas
• Assessing the level to which organisational arrangements improves the outcome of root cause analysis investigations
• Assessing the implementation plans arising from Serious Untoward Incidents indentifying unresolved risks for patient safety
• Assisting the board in its assurance processes
• Complex Root Cause Analysis training
• Implementation and maintenance of risk registers
• NHSLA project management for the acute standards, Maternity and Mental Health risk management standards
• Improvements in Quality
• Assistance in meeting the requirements of the Care Quality contract
• Advice on committee structure, reporting mechanisms and practical solutions on the management of the flow of information to the board
Sian is currently a judge for the National Patient Safety Awards. She has recently been commissioned to undertake a review of SUIs within primary care to provide assurance on the process undertaken thus far. She also continues her work with the National Association of Risk and Lititgation Managers (Alarm).
Outside work her life is centred around her busy family, her love of aga cooking, writing children's stories, and her many animals.
