Len Wilson
MA Dip Clin Psychol AFBPsS CPsychol
Len trained as a clinical psychologist and practised in the NHS in a variety of clinical settings. He has experience of developing and delivering specialist mental health services and of training other professionals, in both clinical techniques and management skills. He managed clinical psychology and specialist nursing services before moving into senior management in the NHS for over ten years.
He was Chief Executive of two NHS Trusts, one a specialist mental health trust and the other delivering mental health, community and learning disability services. He served on the Mental Health Act Commission for over eight years and was appointed to the Section 57 (consent to psychosurgery) Panel.
Having left the NHS in 1998, he became a Associate Director with Mental Health Strategies, bringing to consultancy assignments his mix of clinical practice, operational management and organisation development skills. Drawing on his experience of planning and managing major strategic shift, he has delivered assignments for clients to assist in service strategy development and specialist service commissioning. He has negotiated and delivered a framework for medical engagement in management in a large mental health trust. His experience in training health care professionals and his familiarity with Mental Health Law supported him in delivering jointly with Nick Moor a national programme for Graduate Workers in Primary Care. A recently completed long-term assignment was as an interim Director in a large Charity sector provider, carrying overall responsibility at corporate management board level for a range of community-based services.
Len devotes time also to his role on the Board of Trustees of a charitable organisation delivering services for people with mental health needs across the country. When other commitments permit, he can be found in the early hours watching available coverage of Major League Baseball games – although his passionate devotion to the Boston Red Sox can be a major source of anxiety and frustration!
